Summer Shakespeare Festival 2002

The year 2002 was for the Summer Shakespeare Festival determinating: premiere of 2002 was King Lear starring excellent Jan Tříska. Top-class theatre actor and close friend of president Václav Havel, who left Czechoslovakia in 1970s´ and continued in his career in USA, made his comeback to Czech stage after 27 years like the king Lear. New translation of the play made Martin Hilský, directed by reputable Slovak actor and director Martin Huba.

Interest in The Festival was huge: The Summer Shakespeare Festival visited more than 30 0000 people, including political, culture and sports celebrities. The Festival was successfuls in Brno (The King Lear visited up to 1500 people daily) and The Festival was appreciated in Bratislava as well. The programme was completed by the comedies Love's Labor's Lost directed by Ivan Rajmont, The Merchant of Venice (directed by Michael Tarant, Východočeské divadlo Pardubice) and Twelfth Night, or What You Will (directed by Jan Kačer, Moravské divadlo Olomouc). The Summer Shakespeare Festival and comeback of Jan Tříska was rightly called the culture event of the year. More here
